It is one of the world's biggest museums. Its covered area is about 92,000 sq meters. An Irish born British physician and naturalist Sir Hans Sloan laid the foundation of the museum. He also donates his notable collection to the museum. Later on, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus Charles Newton has played the part to expand the collection of the museum in 1857. Initially, it was started in Montague House London and on July 15th, 1759 it was opened for public. It was shifted to the new Smirk Building which took 30 years to build.
